Frank T. Inouye grew up in pre-WWII Los Angeles. He attended Catholic school, enjoyed camping and cowboy movies, and lettered in tennis at UCLA, but all that changed with Pearl Harbor. Frank — an American citizen with parents born in Japan — was sent to Heart Mountain internment camp on the desolate high plains of Wyoming. His memoir vividly recalls the dynamic neighborhood of his youth, his bewilderment and growing indignation of being imprisoned, and his return to society as a history professor. Frank writes with wisdom, joy, and curiosity about what it means to be an American.
